Baja California, MX RV Trip - Last 3 Weeks

20250208_112918

While staying in La Paz, we had a bus trip to Todos Santos and stopped at a cafe on the way. Good drinks and food, then we continued on the trip. After a short tour of the town and spending a couple hours exploring, we headed off to have lunch at "The Green Room" on the beach with good food. Some old Boomer friends are spending their winter in La Paz and came over to our RV for a great visit. Thanks Don and Glenda! The final day in La Paz, Connie joined the group on a wonderful boat trip to Espiritu Island. The original plan was for everyone to swim with the Sea Lions, however, there were too many jelly fish in the area. The group did get to watch the hundreds of Sea lions and a group of Dolphins playing, including several youngsters. Then they beached at an island for lunch. It was a day full of wildlife sightings; Humpback whales, Dolphins, Mobula Rays, Blue Footed Boobies, Sea Lions, Jelly Fish, Sea Snake, and lots of Sea Birds. Later that night we all gathered to watch the Super (not so super) Bowl.

The next day was a travel day heading further south for a couple hours to Los Barriles. This is another nice RV park with full hook-ups, including decent electric. The weather has been warm during the day and cool at night. These were a few "relaxation" days with no special tours planned. The first day a couple were walking the beach at sunrise and caught a spectacular sight of the Mobula Rays jumping out of the water! Later that day people caught up on chores with some walking into town. The next day, we just relaxed and explored the beach and had a group created Chili Verde dinner. On the third day, most of the group rented ATV's and took a half-day off-road trip to some very small waterfalls. That evening was a group created hamburger dinner together. On our last day here, most people caught up on laundry with a few still having their rental ATV's to drive on the beach. That evening, a cooking class was provided where we all learned to make Sopes. Connie can't wait to get home to make these on her own.

Los Barriles was our turning around point. The traveling north was a lot quicker now. Our next stop was La Paz again for one night. We were treated to dinner out for Valentine's Day. We highly recommend NIM restaurant if you find yourselves in La Paz. From La Paz it was up to the outskirts of Loreto for one night. Here we celebrated one of our fellow traveler's 60th birthday. Manny, our Wagon Master, purchased a pinata and another couple purchased the candy and snacks to fill it. We all took what we wanted and then the rest of the candy and snacks were bagged up to hand out at the military check points. The young military guys loved the gifts and it may have helped in none of us getting pulled over for searches.

The next night, we revisited the same campground in San Lucas, then a night in Guerrero Negro where we had another cooking presentation on making ceviche along with a delicious Mexican plate dinner of tacos, enchilada, chile reallnos, quesadilla, rice, and beans. You do not walk away hungry from this restaurant! On our way to Guerrero Negro, we made a side trip to San Ignacio. A man from our group had heard that they had date shakes and wanted to stop. It was a wonderful break, a cute town with a beautiful old church and delicious shakes! From there we crossed back into Baja California North, after an extremely rough road drive, we arrived at Rancho Grande, San Luis Gonzaga B.C. This campground is on the beach and we each have our own cabana. Perfect to have the group over to play Pegs & Jokers in. (We introduced the group to P&J the previous week and they love it!)

Our last stop was on the outskirts of San Felipe for two nights. On our second night we had our farewell dinner in town at another fabulous restaurant, La Vaquita Marina. The next morning we were up bright and early to finish saying our goodbyes and to make our way to Mexicali for our border crossing. It was a pretty smooth crossing though it could have been disastrous if it hadn't been for some people honking their horns to alert us we were in the wrong lane for a high clearance vehicle. We were able to back up into the correct lane and continue up to the U.S. agent. Their big question for us was, were we smuggling any eggs? Mexican eggs are delicious and a bargain at less than $5 for a flat of 60 eggs. For our 35 day Baja trip, we ended up buying eggs twice. I sure wish we could bring some eggs home with us.
